Swimmer Nikolas Deičmans broke a 12-year-old Latvian record

JSPS deputy director Aldis Trukšāns says that a lot of participants took part in the competition – 745 swimmers, including 159 swimmers from Finland, Estonia and Azerbaijan. JSPS was represented in this competition by 60 athletes who brought home 41 medals, including 20 gold. The competition was held in two age groups: juniors (born in 2006-2010) and young people (born in 2011 and younger).

N. Deičmans, a student of coach Astras Ozoliņa, did the best, winning the title of Latvian junior champion in 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter freestyle, 200-meter backstroke, 200-meter individual medley and 400-meter individual medley. In addition, the athlete managed to set a new Latvian junior record in the 200-meter backstroke, 200-meter and 400-meter medley. In the 200-meter backstroke, Nikolas touched the finish wall after two minutes and 02.65 seconds (2:02.65), breaking the Latvian record set in 2012. It is his first national record in any of the individual distances. The almost eighteen-year-old athlete broke the national record set by Konstantin Blokhin by 0.35 seconds, but improved his personal performance by a second. Thus, Nikolas fulfilled the standard for participation in the European Junior Championship as part of the Latvian national team.

The Latvian junior champion title also went to Kristian Brenčas in the 50-meter freestyle, 50-meter backstroke and 100-meter backstroke. Christian, however, lacked 0.01 seconds to qualify for the European Junior Championship in the 50-meter backstroke.

The title of Latvian junior champion was also won by Elijs Aleksejevs in 100 meters butterfly and 200 meters butterfly, Kristīne Zinoviča in 50 and 100 meters backstroke, the JSPS boys’ team in the 4×100 meters combined relay and 4×100 meters freestyle relay (N. Deičmans, K .Brenčs, E. Aleksejevs, Krišjānis Rozenbilds), JSPS mixed team in the 4×100 meter combined relay (N. Deichmans, K. Brenčs, K. Zinoviča, Marta Upeniece).

The title of Latvian youth champion was won by Mārcis Gudēvics in the 100-meter freestyle, Edvards Deičmans in the 200-meter individual medley, Eva Holme in the 50-meter freestyle, Una Miller in the 200-meter breaststroke and 50-meter butterfly.

In the junior group, vice-champions: K. Branch in 100-meter freestyle and 100-meter breaststroke, Rūdis Sondors in 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke, E. Aleksejevs in 200-meter freestyle, Vitalija Kuzin in 100 and 200-meter backstroke, JSPS boys’ team (N. Deichmans , E. Aleksejevs, Jaroslavs Orbidāns, Reinis Vilciņš) in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay and JSPS girls’ team (K. Zinovića, M. Upeniece, Rūta Škirus, Anna Geraseva) in this relay.

In the youth group, vice-champions: Pauls Kažociņš in 100-meter backstroke, E. Deičmans in 200-meter backstroke, E. Holme in 100-meter freestyle and 50-meter butterfly, U. Miller in 100-meter breaststroke and 200-meter medley, JSPS boys’ team (P. Kažociņš, E. Deichmans, M. Gudēvics, Salvis Škirus) in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay, JSPS mixed team (E. Deichmans, M. Gudēvics, Nikola Stepanova, Sāra Bergkind) in the 4×100 meter combined relay.

Anna Geraseva won the bronze medal in the junior group in the 200-meter backstroke, while in the youth group – Pauls Kažociņš won the 200-meter backstroke, U.Miller in the 100-meter freestyle and E.Hoļme in the 200-meter freestyle.

It should also be noted that for the first time in the competition, Reinis Šteimanis, a student of Anželika Paegle, fulfilled the standard of sports class II, Maxims Šefers, a student of Jeļena Visockas, E. Deičmans, a student of A. Ozoliņa, Elias Rozenštrauh, a student of Inga Arnīte, Marcis Gudēvics and Agate, students of Egija Kravtsova. Laganovska, Germans Gusts, a student of A. Paegles, Reinis Vilciņš and Artjoms Fomenko, students of J. Visockas, and V. Kuzina, a student of A. Paegles, fulfilled the standards for the Master of Sports candidate.
