Barbara Rittner was disappointed by the separation a good two weeks after her surprising exit from the German Tennis Association (DTB). The former national coach told rbb that she “very, very enjoyed” working for the association. She didn’t want to give any details about the farewell, “except that it was a surprise for me too.”

The DTB separated from Rittner in mid-February after almost two decades, citing “different ideas about future cooperation” as the reason. The former top 30 player could have imagined staying. “Yes, under certain circumstances I would have continued,” said the 1992 Fed Cup winner.

“Grateful that I was able to experience this time”

She looks back with pride on her successful years with top players such as Angelique Kerber, Jule Görges and Andrea Petkovic. “I’m grateful that I was able to experience this time. I have a very good relationship with all of these players, especially Kerber and Petkovic, with whom I worked until the end at the DTB. It was a successful time that I couldn’t miss I get goosebumps when I think back,” said Rittner.

Rittner’s contract expired in February. It has not yet been decided who will succeed Rittner as the women’s head national coach. Ex-professional Rainer Schüttler has been responsible for the national team in today’s Billie Jean King Cup (formerly Fed Cup) for a long time.
