Surprise Names in Julian Nagelsmann’s Squad for European Championships Warm-Up Games

A few days before national coach Julian Nagelsmann’s last nomination before the home European Championships in 2024, the first names are leaking out and they have a surprise in store.

Nagelsmann has nominated the four Stuttgart players Chris Führich (26), Deniz Undav (27), Maximilian Mittelstädt (26) and Waldemar Anton (27) for the friendly games against France (March 23) and Holland (March 26).

“Sky” reported this first and coincides with BILD information.

Maxi Mittelstädt (2nd from left), Waldemar Anton (3rd from left), Chris Führich (3rd from right) and Deniz Undav (r.) are said to have been nominated for the international matches in March

Chris Führich had already been nominated for the trip to the USA in October 2023. He made his international debut in the friendly against the USA when he came on as a substitute in the 81st minute of the game. For the three other Stuttgart players, it is the first nomination for the DFB team.

Julian Nagelsmann nominates Mittelstädt, Anton, Führich and Undav

All four played a major role in VfB having an outstanding season (3rd place, 53 points) in the Bundesliga.

Anton is captain and head of defense. Mittelstädt in particular (2 goals/3 assists) has recently made a steep rise and can help in the problem position at left back. Führich (7 goals/7 assists) also plows the left side, albeit offensively, Undav is currently the most dangerous German center forward with 14 goals and 5 assists.

There are signs of further surprise nominations. Hoffenheim star Maximilian Beier (21), who scored twice against Bremen and BVB and now has twelve league goals, also has a good chance of being in the squad.

Dortmund’s Mats Hummels (35), Nico Schlotterbeck (24) and Niklas Süle (28) currently have to worry about their European Championship ticket – with Anton a direct competitor has now been nominated for the first time. Antonio Rüdiger (31) from Real Madrid is set to be the head of defense. Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah (28) was recommended for the starting eleven as a sideman.

The position of left-back is still open – for which Mittelstädt has now been added. Leipzig’s David Raum (25) seems to have little chance under Nagelsmann; so far he has only played 25 minutes against Mexico (2:2). Robin Gosens (29) from Union Berlin would be the only real specialist, although his strengths are more in front of a three-man chain. Benjamin Henrichs (27/Leipzig), who lost his place on the right to Joshua Kimmich (29), could therefore move into the European Championship starting eleven on the left.

Julian Nagelsmann wants to officially announce his squad on Thursday.
