According to documents, the University of Maryland’s expenditures on football have increased, but they still lag behind the top football programs in the Big Ten.

Maryland has been increasing its funding for football despite facing competition from larger programs. According to records obtained through a Maryland Public Information Act request, the university’s spending on football increased from .2 million in 2014 to .8 million in 2022, a significant 90% rise.

In August of last year, coach Mike Locksley stated to the media that his team, after a record of 8-5 (4-5 in conference games), was finally ready to compete for Big Ten championships. He expressed that this was the first time he had made such a bold statement in four previous meetings with reporters.

Maryland had left its previous conference two years prior due to financial constraints that resulted in the elimination of seven sports.

As reported by USA Today, the Big Ten conference was the top earner among the Power Five conferences with a total revenue of 5.6 million. In the 2022 fiscal year, Maryland received .8 million in shared revenues from the conference and .1 million in the previous year, according to the school’s NCAA annual reports.

According to college sports expert Karen Weaver, who is an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education, Maryland faced a difficult situation when they lost many sports. The Big Ten conference provided a solution to their problem.

The median amount for the Big Ten total was .7 million for the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2022. Unfortunately, details on Northwestern’s spending were not provided as it is a privately funded university.

After ten years of being a member of the Big Ten Conference, the University of Maryland is investing significantly less in their football program compared to their main competitors, leading to concerns about their chances of competing for conference titles.

Although their campus residence has been renovated, the football team’s performance in the conference has not been consistent.

In 2021, the state of Maryland unveiled the Jones-Hill House, which features football practice fields, a strength and conditioning room, locker rooms, an auditorium, a dining area, and other amenities. The project, which also includes a research center and other non-sports facilities, was made possible by a successful fundraising effort and had a price tag exceeding 0 million, according to the university.
Jensen stated that Maryland can confidently maintain its position in the top tier of college athletics.

In 2014, after being part of the Atlantic Coast Conference for 61 years, Maryland made the decision to become part of the more profitable Big Ten. This move was made in hopes of improving the football program, revitalizing the fan base, and ensuring long-term financial stability for the athletics department through equal distribution of league-wide earnings.

The Terps achieved a 8-5 record, placed fourth in their division, and won a bowl game for the third consecutive year, breaking a school record.

In 2023, the Penn State Nittany Lions will face off against the Maryland Terrapins in the Big 10 conference.

They came to the realization that they had a long way to go in terms of upgrading their facilities and increasing coaching salaries, as the demands of travel also shifted.

Out of the 14 teams in the conference, Maryland’s spending on football was only higher than Illinois and Purdue ( million and .8 million respectively). However, with the new addition of Southern California, UCLA, Washington, and Oregon next year, this ranking may change.

In the fiscal year of 2022, Maryland allocated .8 million towards their football expenses, according to data from The Baltimore Sun and the Knight-Newhouse College Athletics Database. This was a lower amount compared to the budgets of Ohio State (.1 million), Penn State (.6 million), Michigan (.4 million), and Michigan State (.2 million).

The Terps have never achieved a winning record in Big Ten games, with a conference record of 27-57. However, their 8-10 record during 2022 and 2023 was their most successful performance in the two years since joining the league.

According to Jason Yellin, spokesperson for the athletics department, there has been a significant increase and this trend is expected to continue. He also mentioned that the department will continue to make wise investments.

Median football spending at Big Ten universities saw an increase over the same timeframe, though not as significant. The median went up from .7 million to .7 million, a 52% growth.
