Yet another big blow. KAA Gent did a bad job in the race to the top 6. In an eventful match, the visitors did take the lead in Liège, but an early red card and penalty on the stroke of half time turned the match around. Standard still handed Ghent a heavy defeat – after questionable phases on both sides.

Standard – Ghent in a nutshell:

    • Key moment: A fusillade from Yeboah roughly closed the book full of Ghent hope. The sore points of the Ghent defense were then exposed and the 3-1 and 4-1 quickly followed.
    • Man of the match: Kelvin Yeboah showed himself to be the most important man on the field for the first time in the Standard shirt. Due to his speed, the Ghent defenders ran after the facts. He was the reason for the red card and crowned his evening in the second half with 2 good goals.
    • Questionable phases: It has been associated with KAA Gent lately. Once again we have to talk about some remarkable decisions by the race management. There was a lot of discussion about Nurio’s red card. And Ghent could have received a penalty for Noubi’s drawing foul on Brown.

Leko wanted support from the fans, he got support from the fans. Unfurled tifos, loud chants. And certainly when Fellaini came onto the field to kick off, the decibel meter went into the air. A smart move by Standard’s marketing team.

It also rubbed off on their favorite players on the pitch. Despite Standard’s busy opening minutes, the goal still came at the other end. With a corner kick, Bodart went under the ball, Tissoudali only had to nod in at the far post: 0-1 after fifteen minutes for KAA Gent.

    Tissoudali headed the 0-1 in.

    Questionable phases

But then Nurio started pulling too showily on the faster Yeboah. An early red card was the result. Although he did not have to throw a spanner in Ghent’s works. On the contrary, it even started to play better, combined more freely, was more clever in attack and made it quite difficult for Standard with 10.

Mitrovic was closest to 0-2, but teammate Brown’s back got in the way.

The same Brown was a scourge for Noubi. When Brown passed him again in 16, Standard’s right back copied Nurio’s earlier red maneuver. But now De Cremer didn’t think it was a mistake and therefore no penalty. The VAR also did not intervene. Understand who can understand.

A little later, De Cremer pointed resolutely to the spot when Gerkens briefly touched the ball with the back of his arm. In the first leg Kanga missed 2, this time he scored the penalty flawlessly. Standard could thank the football gods with a 1-1 halftime score.

Hein Vanhaezebrouck was furious again after a few questionable phases.

Yeboah exposes a sore point in Ghent’s defense

After a fierce Ghent start to the second half, Balikwisha sent Yeboah towards goal with a beautiful pass between 3 men. The Standard striker shot Schmidt from close range. 2-1.

And then it went quickly. Standard had exposed Ghent’s Achilles heel. At speed, the slow central defenders were caught twice in a short space of time. First Kawabe and then Yeboah neatly placed 3-1 and 4-1 on the scoreboard in the same way.

Ghent could only mitigate through a clumsy goal from Samoise, a small plaster on a wound that was too big. In the end, they missed another opportunity to make the final phase extra exciting, but Noubi deflected a free kick headed by Watanabe off the line.

Sclessin saw what it has not seen for a while: a satisfying big win that provided relief from play-down fears. 2024 does not look too good for Ghent. It is struggling on the edge of PO 1, in 7th place, and sees KV Mechelen creeping closer to within 1 point.

Yeboah’s execution was the beginning of the end for Ghent.

Standard coach Ivan Leko: “Finally a nice evening”

    • Kelvin Yeboah (Standard): I feel great and I’m so happy for the team. We worked hard for it and after disappointing results, victory is now a fact. This club deserves to be higher. And we thank the fans for their unconditional support. Was it red? Yes, with my speed he couldn’t keep up with me anymore (smiles).
    • Pieter Gerkens (KAA Gent): We had a good start. It went up and down. With the goal we were on roses. Too bad that red card was still issued. And then that penalty was perhaps the final blow. That ball on my upper arm? He’s hitting my arm, I know it. Had no idea where my arm was at that moment.
    • Ivan Leko (coach Ghent): Very important victory, after we were very close week after week. Then it is difficult to bring confidence back into the team. Today was good from start to finish. Finally, everyone who loves Standard can enjoy a nice evening after football.

    Phase by phase

    END: Standard beats Ghent 4-2!

After Tissoudali’s 0-1 lead, a first half full of questionable phases unfolded. Red for Nurio. No penalty for Brown. Careless kick from Fernandez-Pardo. Hands from Gerkens and therefore a penalty for Standard. And a 1-1 at half time.

In the second half, Yeboah put an end to Standard’s doubts with a shot. The weakness of the defense at Ghent was exposed: speed. Depth passes followed each other and first Kawabe and then Yeboah set Sclessin up for success. Samoise’s fumbling goal was a small plaster on an already too big wound. It could still be exciting, but Noubi denied Watanabe from 4-3 from the line in the final minutes.

    Almost 4-3!

We almost had a nice ending! A free kick from Hong hits the target, Watanabe puts his head against it. The ball goes past Bodart, but not past Noubi who puts his head against it from the line!

Standard immediately counters with the counter. Perica’s punch is straight at Schmidt.

    8 – extra time

There will be an additional 8 minutes of time.

Yeboah is sent into the depths again. This time he cannot get past his attacker. His tap is too far, Schmidt picks up.

A flare or two flies from the Ghent section onto the field. In the meantime, De Cremer gives Leko the opportunity to make some changes. The fire brigade arrives quickly. De Cremer waits patiently until it has done its work and the speaker reverberates a warning through Sclessin.

Schmidt knows what a rescue is again. It’s been a while since this match. He keeps his compatriot Kawabe from scoring with his foot.

    Ghent softens

A textbook fumble goal. Attempts by Tissoudali and Brown do not lead to the savior. Samoise can do that. He kicks the ball against Bodart, on the rebound it unintentionally bounces off the Ghent resident again, causing him to eventually roll over the goal line. 4-2.
