The Astra cinema in Florence was transformed into a judo hall on Tuesday evening. The over one hundred armchairs have disappeared underground, in their place real tatami mats have appeared on the floor, the traditional Japanese internal flooring made up of modular rectangular panels. The cinema screen has also been lowered as a result.
All this happened for the special screening of Tatami by Guy Nattiv and Zar Amir Ebrahimi. Before the film, there was a performance by judo athletes from various Florentine schools.
The film, followed by spectators sitting or lying on the tatami, tells a story of great emotional impact and relevance: for the first time in history an Israeli director and an Iranian director join their gazes to tell a story of rare power.
Leila and her coach Maryam are representing Iran at the World Judo Championships when they receive an ultimatum from the Islamic Republic. Leila’s positive series of victories risks making her clash on the tatami with the athlete from Israel, a country that Iran does not recognise. The regime then orders her to fake an injury and withdraw from the competition, otherwise there will be serious repercussions. With the safety of herself and her family at risk, Leila faces an impossible choice: respect the regime’s will, as Maryam implores her to do, or keep fighting, for the medal and for freedom.
