Spanish Tennis: Carlos Alcaraz Left to Defend National Honor as Davidovich Exits Miami Open

Since 2023, the fact that Carlos Alcaraz will soon be left alone defending the national honor on the great stages of world tennis and the Miami Open has not been an exception because Alexander Davidovichnumber 28 in the world rankings, said goodbye this Sunday after losing in the third round to the eighth, the Norwegian Casper Ruudby 6-3 and 6-4 in one hour and 36 minutes.

The man from Malaga has had a discreet passage through the two spring Masters 1,000 on American soil since in Indian Wells he said goodbye at the first opportunity with a defeat in the second round against the Frenchman Arthur Sonnumber 37.

In Indian Wells there were only five Spaniards in the men’s main draw of the tournament and only the Murcian made it past the second round, something that had already happened this year at the Australian Open, where the Spanish tennis only had 11 representatives in the individual tables (seven men and four women).

If we go back to 2023, the outlook does not improve. Davidovich reached the semifinals at the Canadian Masters 1000 and the quarterfinals in Miami but in the big three, no Spaniard, beyond Alcaraz, had a relevant role.

Roberto Bautista reached the round of 16 in Australia and Davidovich himself fell in the third round of the US Open, Wimbledon and Roland Garros. The rest, not even that.

The data contrasts with what was achieved in 2022, beyond the outstanding performance of Rafael Nadal, champion in Australia and Roland Garros and semi-finalist at Wimbledon.

Hope is called Landaluce

And it is that Pablo Carreño won the Canadian Masters 1000 and Davidovich was a finalist in Monte Carlo. In addition, Nadal, Davidovich and Carreño reached the round of 16 at the US Open, a tournament that would end in the Alcaraz showcases.

The current drought persists and a better future is not in sight, at least in the short term. It remains to be seen the evolution of Martín Landaluce, who at 18 years old won his first ATP match in Miami although yesterday he lost, as expected, against the American Ben Shelton.
