Spanish Dominance in Portugal International Championships: Seven National Representatives Advance to Round of 16

Spanish badminton continues ahead in the Portugal International Championships that will take place starting Wednesday in Caldas de Rainha. This Friday the round of 32 was played, which concluded with the classification of seven national representatives for the next round.

The competition resumes this Saturday at 9:00 a.m. (Spanish time) with the round of 16 duels. This same day the quarterfinals will be played, so Sunday is reserved for the semifinals and finals.

The Spanish accent continues to be felt strongly thanks to Clara Azurmendi and Ania Setién on an individual level and also in the doubles events thanks to five Spanish couples that are still in contention, three men, one woman and one mixed.

The Spanish participation this Saturday is opened by the tandem of Rubén García and Lucía Rodríguez, who begins their participation in Portuguese lands this Saturday. They will do it in the first round of competition against the English Ethan Van Leeuwen and Chloe Birch.

In the third round, at around 10:20 a.m., Clara Azurmendi, the first seed, will face Poland’s Wiktoria Dabczynska and Ania Setién will take to the court immediately to face India’s Isharani Barúah.

Around 1:00 p.m. it will be time to see the female pair of Paula López and Lucía Rodríguez in action, against the Swiss Lucie Amiguet and Vera Appenzeller, and the male pair of Daniel Franco and Jacobo Fernández, against the Germans David Eckerlin and Simonn Krax.

In the next round, which is estimated to be played around 1:40 p.m., the Spanish participation in the round of 16 will be closed by two other men’s doubles: Adolfo López and Rodrigo Sanjurjo will face the Taiwanese Chen Zhi Ray and Lin Yu Chieh, while Carlos Piris and Rubén García, third seeds, will play against Icelanders David Bjarni Bjornsson and Kristofer Darri Finnnsson.
