The South-West continued its momentum on the third day of competition in the second block of the Quebec Games in Sherbrooke and ultimately completed its table which will be adorned with 25 medals.

Campivallensian Zitlalli Gravel finally got her hands on a trio of medals by winning gold in the short distance of the 500m in short track speed skating. The two previous days, the young skater who practices her discipline in a sport-study formula had already collected silver in the 1000 and 1500 m events at the Eugène-Lalonde Arena. There, her family was overjoyed and her grandfather swore he had dreamed of his granddaughter with gold around her neck the day before.

Alexanne Martel-Baril of Vaudreuil-Dorion had already started the skating team’s winning streak by collecting gold among the 13-year-olds.

Dive towards success

The last medal for the South-West in the diving pool dates back to 2015. The young Lauric Dufresne from Pincourt remedied the situation twice rather than once by winning silver in the 3m in the 12-14 year old Espoir category, and bronze in the 1m.

Thus, the South-West won a medal in gymnastics, in the first block, while Samuel Dion flew through the vault event, even with a shoulder injury.

Then in the second block, the delegation led by Antoine Lépine-Perreault got their hands on 24 honors. Weightlifting demonstrated once again what it is made of by taking 13 medals and 3rd place in the 19 regions.

In judo, four podiums were recorded in the South-West column, while diving added two.

Finally, speed skating took two gold medals, as many silvers and one bronze.

In other sports, note that women’s hockey took 12th place following a 2-1 loss against Centre-du-Québec, which finished 11th.

Games that exceed expectations

“It is certain that as we approach the closing ceremony, all these successes mean that we are spoiled for choice as to our standard bearer. We will have to analyze the situation to award this honor to an athlete who has surpassed himself, but each athlete who has worn the Blue and Green in recent weeks deserves to be warmly applauded,” declares the head of mission who will unveil the The athlete selected a few minutes before the procession in the Palais des Sports in Sherbrooke.

Antoine Lépine-Perreault continued by mentioning that the Games were incredible. “This edition becomes a reference for the next Quebec Games. Both in terms of infrastructure and the excellence of the organizing committee. We were pampered, well received and we received recognition from them. The people of Sherbrooke, the volunteers, the coaches and the athletes were brilliant,” he pleads, hoping for future equally flamboyant editions in Trois-Rivières in the summer of 2025 and in Blainville in the winter of 2026.
