Hämmerle spoke of “mega pressure” in advance after the previous races had not gone as planned. “You come here, of course you want to deliver, and if the race ends like that, it’s of course wonderful,” explained Hämmerle after his second win of the season and fourth podium finish. Lüftner made the stock comeback after a break of more than two years.

The two ÖSV drivers pulled off a stunning feat in the semi-finals by overtaking season leader Eliot Grondin at the finish line. Only the photo finish dissolved the scene. This was the first time this season that the Canadian overall World Cup leader failed to make it into the top three.

Photo finish prevents ÖSV double victory

At the snowboard cross home world cup in Montafon, the ÖSV boarders narrowly missed out on a double victory. While Alessandro Hämmerle was able to celebrate his third home win in a row, his teammate Julian Lüftner narrowly missed second place.

Photo finish also in the final

In the final, Hämmerle was safe for a long time before things got close again in the last few meters. It was only after the photo finish decision that cheers broke out again.

World champion Jakob Dusek fell in the quarterfinals. For Luca Hämmerle it was the last sixteen, the other ÖSV boarders failed in the qualification the day before. A second race takes place on Sunday.
