Ski jumping in Trondheim – Kvandal celebrates its next victory

As of: March 12, 2024 7:45 p.m

Selina Freitag (Aue) was the only German ski jumper to show a really good performance on the next stop of the “Raw Air” tour in Trondheim and achieved her best placement of the season so far with seventh place. While the other DSV jumpers disappointed, other nations claimed victory among themselves.

Just one good jump is not enough at the top of the world. Germany’s actually best ski jumper Katharina Schmid also knows this. But as with the last competition in Oslo, the Oberstdorfer didn’t show any consistency in her jumps on the normal hill in Trondheim. The receipt: With sets of 87.0 and – slightly better in the second round – 93.0 meters, the multiple world champion was “only” able to reach 16th place in the final tally.

Selina Freitag saves DSV honor: “Try to take that with you”

That meant she wasn’t even the best DSV athlete where she wants to defend three world titles next year. Selina Freitag (Aue) secured this accolade. The 22-year-old from the Erzgebirge reached 93 and 97 meters and came in a good seventh place.

“I’m very happy with my competition today, the jumps have gotten better and better,” said Freitag on ZDF. “I’m trying to take that with me in terms of technique and that I just keep the flow and then hopefully get into flying,” she continued, already looking ahead to the next competition on the large hill in Trondheim and the ski flying hill in Vikersund.

Currently big gap to the world leaders

Overall, German women are still far from the best in the world. The team result doesn’t lie: Like Schmid, Anna Rupprecht (Degenfeld) only managed one good jump (89/86.5 m). In the final round she lost eight places, ended up losing eight places and ended up 24th.

Agnes Reisch (Isny), Juliane Seyfarth (Ruhla) and Luisa Görlich (Lauscha) only just qualified for the final round. Reisch in 26th, Seyfarth, who managed to gain two places in the final, in 28th and Görlich, another place behind, were unable to perform as hoped.

Second win in a row for Kvandal

As in Oslo, Norwegian Eirin Maria Kvandal achieved this, celebrating her second World Cup victory in a row and her third overall. With jumps of 96 and 98.5 meters, she narrowly relegated the Austrian Eva Pinkelnuig and the Slovenian Nika Kriznar, who was still leading after the first round, to second place.

“I’m very happy today,” said Kvandal, whose whole family was there at the jump. She wants to approach the jumping on the large hill on Wednesday (March 13th) with a lot of respect in order to keep the lead in the tournament rankings.

And what does that mean for the overall “Raw Air” rankings? Kvandal continues to be at the top. She further extended her lead over Pinkelnig. Katharina Schmid, previously in third place, lost important points. In the overall World Cup standings, Kvandal moved past Schmid, who is now only tenth.

The Raw Air series will now continue with competitions on Wednesday on the large hill in Trondheim and on the weekend on the ski flying hill in Vikersund.
