Skateboarding, Italy’s road to the 2024 Olympics: who qualifies for Paris?

Twelve medals in skateboarding will be up for grabs at the Paris 2024 Olympics, equally divided between men and women. The disciplines that will take center stage in the French capital will be the street and the parkjust as it had already happened at Tokyo 2020, when this sport made its debut in the five-ring program.

88 athletes will participate in the event and the qualification rules are very simple: The twenty best athletes in the ranking of each discipline will purchase a ticket for the Games at the end of the admission process, with a maximum limit of three skaters for each country in each discipline. In the event that there are more than three compatriots in the top-20 of the world ranking, then only the best three will represent their country in Paris 2024 and a repechage will then proceed following the ranking positions outside the top twenty.

There are only a couple of events left until the ranking closes: the first in Shanghai (China) from 14 to 19 May, the second in Budapest (Hungary) from 18 to 23 June. What is the situation in Italy? Alessandro Mazzara and Alex Sorgente are 18th and 19th respectively in the park rankings: at the moment the two Italians would be qualified in Paris 2024, also because the top 20 include five Brazilians and five Americans.

More difficult situation in the street, where Agustin Aquila he is 40th: great results will be needed in the next two events to grab the five-circle pass. Among women, however, there is no possibility in the street (there are no Italians in the top-44, therefore none will participate in the Shanghai and Budapest races), while Lucrezia Zarattini it’s 44th in the park.
