Jannik Sinner will be back in action at the Masters 1000 tournament in Miami on Tuesday evening. A highway suddenly opens up in front of him.

For the third in the world rankings, only unseeded games await on the way to the semi-finals. In the tournament grid, six of the eight seeded players in his quarter, Andrei Rublev (5), Stefanos Tsitsipas (10), Tommy Paul (13), Alexander Bublik (17), Frances Tiafoe (21) and Tomas Etcheverry (29), were eliminated. Sinner got another one out of the way himself: Tallon Griekspoor (25).

Now the high-flyer from South Tyrol faces an underdog in the Australian Christopher O’Connell, number 66 in the world. However, there are two reasons why he should be forewarned: Firstly, Sinner lost the only meeting with O’Connell so far in 2021 in Atlanta in two sets. On the other hand, the hard-fought 5:7, 7:5, 6:1 against Griekspoor may have been a warning signal.

The round of 16 duel between Sinner and O’Connell is scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. (CET). If the 22-year-old from Sesto overcomes this hurdle, he could face the Italian Matteo Arnaldi in the quarterfinals if he defeats the Czech Tomas Machac. The first real cracker in this tournament would be waiting for Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals.

Musetti takes out Shelton

In addition to Sinner and Arnaldi, Lorenzo Musetti, another Azzurro in Florida, is in the round of 16. The 22-year-old from Tuscany showed what was probably his best performance of the season last night (CET) in the duel of exceptional talents with the American Ben Shelton, the same age, and prevailed 6:4 and 7:6. Now Musetti meets world number two Carlos Alcaraz.
