Ship that crashed into bridge in Baltimore has containers with dangerous material – El Sol de México

The merchant ship that crashed into a bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday morning has 4,700 containers on board, 56 of them containing dangerous material, although they do not pose a public danger, US authorities said Wednesday.

Vice Admiral Peter Gautier, deputy commander of operations for the United States Coast Guard, explained in a press conference that “the ship is stable but still has more than one and a half million gallons of fuel oil and lubricating oil on board and has 4 1,700 cargo containers on board.

In the crash that led to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, a total of 13 containers, which “do not contain hazardous materials,” fell overboard into the water.

“There is no threat to the public from hazardous materials on board. So we obtained the manifest of the vessel that the container ships are carrying and performed that analysis of the types of hazardous materials hub and board,” he said.

The press conference took place at the White House, after both officials met in the Oval Office with President Joe Biden to inform him of the latest details of what happened.

Gautier was accompanied at the press conference by the US Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, and neither of them wanted to offer details about the investigation into what happened.

“We prefer to leave any information to the authority that is investigating it,” the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), an independent organization of the United States Government that is dedicated to accident investigation.

The vice admiral confirmed that the ship’s crew “are still on board and are cooperating” with the investigation.

They remain on board and the predominantly Indian and Sri Lankan crew are heavily involved in the dialogue and investigation.

The US Secretary of Transportation, Pete Buttigieg, stated for his part that the Coast Guard’s “top priority now is to restore the waterway for maritime transport” in one of the ports.

The container ship Dali hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, causing much of the infrastructure to collapse.

At least 6 employees of a company that was carrying out repair work on the bridge have lost their lives, all of them of Central American and Mexican origin, and efforts continue to rescue the bodies.
