Setback for Andy Murray: Ankle Injury Threatens End-of-Career Plans

How bitter!

Andy Murray (36) suffered a serious ankle injury at the Miami Open and must expect a longer break. Does this also endanger his plans for the end of his career?

Murray announced the bitter news himself on Instagram on Monday evening, writing: “Yesterday towards the end of my game in Miami I suffered a complete tear of my ATFL and a near complete tear of my CFL.”

Means: His anterior ankle ligament and his calcaneal ligament are affected.

Murray continued: “Upon my return I will see an ankle specialist to determine next steps.”

“Of course this is a big blow and I will be out for a long time. But I will come back with one hip and no ankle straps when the time is right,” the Brit bravely wrote.

Murray sustained the injury during his third round match against Czech Tomas Machac (7:5, 5:7, 6:7 (5:7)). The two-time Wimbledon winner even briefly fell to the ground in pain, but was able to finish the match after a medical timeout.

Doubly bitter: For Murray, this summer could have been his big farewell tour from the tennis circus.

He only announced the end of his career in February. He said at the time that he would “probably not play beyond the summer.” This could end after the Olympic Games in Paris (July 26th – August 11th).

Is the injury now putting a damper on his plans? Hardly likely.

As The Guardian reports, recovery from such an injury can take over six weeks, depending on the person and the severity of the injury.

But: Murray will at least have to worry about his start at the French Open (May 20th – June 9th). He wanted to play in Roland Garros for the first time since 2020. Is Wimbledon also in danger? The Grand Slam tournament in London starts on July 1st. Murray has already won the grass tournament twice.
