The councilor-president of Hortaleza, David Pérez, today presented a contest to select the district’s official sweet, “a distinctive product that boosts local commerce activity and promotes its rich historical and cultural heritage.”

Pérez explained that this is an initiative of the municipal board, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Commerce, Hospitality and Consumption of the Area of Economy, Innovation and Finance, the Association of Artisan Entrepreneurs of the Pastry Sector of Madrid (ASEMPAS) and the support of the Madrid Academy of Gastronomy.

As he explained, “this initiative seeks to boost commerce and accentuate the tradition of Hortaleza, a district with a long history that today is one of the most thriving and with the greatest future projection in the capital.” According to bases of the Vegetable Sweet, this contest is aimed at pastry and hospitality establishments located in the district and private individuals are not allowed to participate. The registration period extends until April 19.

On May 6, a jury made up of professionals from the sector will select the winning proposal taking into account criteria of appearance, texture, originality and flavor. It will also be valued that the sweet evokes some sign of identity or aspect related to the cultural and historical heritage of Hortaleza “and that it is easily reproduced by pastry shops and hospitality establishments so that it is consolidated as the official sweet,” Pérez stressed. The winning establishment will receive a trophy, as well as the dissemination of the recipe and a presentation of its preparation within the Spring Festival programming.
