Dominic Thiem actually wanted to take part in the Challenger tournament in Naples this week, but after his clear defeat in the round of 16 in Zadar, the 30-year-old prefers to take a break. And he will probably also think about his future. Most recently, the 2020 US Open winner had not ruled out an early end to his career.

The Austrian number one, Sebastian Ofner, has naturally not gone unnoticed by his compatriot’s form crisis. “I think he’s going through a difficult phase,” said the Styrian after his second-round defeat in Miami. “I think he has to find himself sometime.”

Since his comeback in spring 2022 – Thiem injured his wrist in June 2021 – the former world number three has not yet found his old strength. Why this is the case is also unclear to Ofner: “It’s always difficult to say because you never know what’s going on with a player. But I don’t think you need to give any advice to a former world-class player.”

Ofner believes Thiem can jump to big tournaments

Thiem is now only in position 90 in the ranking. From Ofner’s point of view, this does not have to become a permanent situation: “Dominic was a world-class player. If he finds his level again, he can definitely play in the big tournaments again.”

Thiem will make his next appearance at the ATP 250 tournament in Estoril (April 1st to 7th). Ofner will be playing at the simultaneous event in Marrakesh. The two Austrians will probably only see each other again during the European clay court season.
