Santos FC: Struggling to Rise Again from Serie B and Financial Issues

The images of the night of December 7, 2023 still haunt a lot of people in Santos. That evening, O Peixe was relegated to the second division (Serie B), for the first time in its history. A monumental shame for the club which gave Pelé and Neymar to the world of football. An unacceptable event for supporters who did not hesitate to set the city on fire to express their anger. Three and a half months after these terrible scenes, Santos must deal with reality. In a month, the team led by Fabio Luis Carille will make its Serie B debut at home against Paysandú. And the situation is not the best.

Lately, rumors about the club’s desire to bring back Neymar have given some comfort to the hearts of Paulista fans, but the native of Mogi in Cruzes is still very far from a comeback at Vila Belmiro. And Santos, who is certainly qualified for the semi-finals of the Paulista championship (against RB Bragantino), must face a difficult situation. Peixe’s objective is clear: to move up to Serie A next year. The only problem is that coach Carille doesn’t expect much from potential recruits. The fault lies in the dispute between Santos and the Russians from Krasnodar concerning the transfer of Peruvian midfielder Christian Cueva. The latter was bought by Santos in 2019 for €6.4 million and the Brazilians still owe around €3 million to the Russians. An amount they should have paid last year.

Big financial worries

A sanction which is likely to occur according to the president of Santos, Marcelo Teixeira. “We are currently negotiating to avoid the transfer ban. We understand that there is a natural distrust. We are trying to show something different, by offering guarantees to demonstrate that Santos has the capacity to honor the payments. But there is an obvious difficulty and Santos is in danger. The latest attempts to pay in installments by the current Peixe management were refused and the Russians only agreed to include players, such as defender Joaquim. If the issue is not resolved by the last week of March, Santos will face a transfer ban and will not be able to register new players, as already notified by FIFA. » In the meantime, 28-year-old right back Rodrigo Ferreira (recruited from Mirassol) is Santos’ only recruit and Krasnodar refused to enlist central defender Messias.

And the problems don’t stop there. Following the serious incidents that occurred on the evening of the club’s relegation, Santos had to play six of its first nine home matches without an audience. To launch the season of redemption, there is something better. Finally, even coach Carille poses a problem. Arriving from V-Varen Nagasaki, the Brazilian technician was the subject of a complaint from the Japanese club who believe that Carille is still without a contract. A new case on which FIFA will have to decide. “For Carille, we received nothing. On the Santos side, the situation is safe, because there is a legal imbroglio in which Santos is not involved so far, unless something is discovered later involving the club., confided Teixeira.
