Acapulco.— Currently, the best Mexican tennis player on the ATP circuit is Santiago González, who occupies ninth place in the doubles ranking. For this to happen, he had to wait 22 years, because it was in 2023 when he found the best version of himself on the court.
“In recent years, I have gotten to know myself much better, I have stayed out of injuries, I have a better diet, better performance on and off the court,” said the Veracruz native, in an exclusive interview with EL UNIVERSAL Deportes.

Last season, the 41-year-old player recorded his best ranking (seventh, in November) and won five titles – two were Masters 1000 (Miami and Paris) – which, being younger, he could not achieve. He assures that those successes were due to the maturity and resilience that he has.
“Tennis finds you. I found my best way to play with a good partner, I found the support of sponsors to be able to do things better, and it doesn’t matter if it was at 40 years old; In the end, it is better to say that it happened than that it did not happen,” he said.
González added that he feels “proud” because he fulfilled the goal he set when he started playing tennis, and emphasizes that he did not give up.

“There are many who give up on their goal and retire. I decided to try to reach it year after year; I came close several times, but I finally did it,” he added.
Just as Santiago looks in the men’s division, the also Mexican Giuliana Olmos—in 2022—became the first tricolor to reach the Top 10 of the WTA in doubles. The Veracruz native thinks that his compatriots stand out in this modality for an economic reason.
