Santiago Gimenez will quickly want to forget the international match between Panama and Mexico (0-3 win). Feyenoord’s popular striker was sidelined for the entire Nations League match by national coach Jaime Lozano. Gimenez had to warm up several times, but was eventually called back to the bench. There, the Mexican kicked a dugout out of frustration, which did not cause any damage.

Gimenez is now so big in Mexico that it is a thing when he doesn’t play. His teammates managed to deal with Panama effortlessly thanks to goals from former Ajax player Edson Alvarez (West Ham United), Julián Quiñones (Club América) and Orbelín Pineda (AEK Athens), but that could not reduce the frustration of the disappointed Gimenez.

After being captured in frustration several times by the television cameras, a spectator managed to capture how the striker walked towards the dugout after an unsuccessful warm-up with lead in his shoes. There, Gimenez kicked the bench again, only to take a disappointed seat next to some teammates.

It is still unknown why Gimenez remained sidelined for the entire match. In his last five matches for Feyenoord, the club’s top scorer managed to score three more times. It seems that national coach Jaime Lozano wants to encourage the goalkeeper to make a summer transfer, as the Mexican choice has spoken out several times about his future at De Kuip.

Last week, Lozano again made a number of statements about Gimenez during a press moment for the Mexican media. “There are several clubs that want to pay a lot next summer. He has grown enormously. What I think, feel and discussed a little with the club is that it will be difficult for Santiago to stay at this club for a long time. Because there are several clubs that will pay a lot next summer and who are very interested in him.”

A new important match awaits Mexico in the CONCACAF Nations League on Sunday night. With the victory over Panama, Gimenez’s country qualified for the final of the mini tournament, in which the United States is the last hurdle. The Feyenoord striker hopes to make minutes on behalf of his country.

United States – Jamaica 3-1

The other semifinal, between Team USA and Jamaica, ended 3-1. With PSV’s Malik Tillman in the starting line-up and Ricardo Pepi as a substitute, the US had a difficult evening. Greg Leigh (header) gave the visiting country the lead in the first minute, after which the Americans had to slow down.

National coach Gregg Berhalter’s team only tied the score in the sixth minute of injury time through an own goal by Jamaica striker Cory Burke, who nodded a corner into the wrong goal. In extra time, it was not Pepi, but another substitute who became the winner. Coventry City forward Haji Wright gave Team USA the win with a double.
