Saalbach part 2 – Sparse Considerations

Switzerland takes everything or almost everything in Saalbach. Beyond Odermatt, Gut wins the Super G but Hütter ruins the party in the Downhill.

SUPER G Female – Ester Ledecká and Cartesian dualism! Its subject (nothing extensive) is snowboarding, thinking (thinking about things) travels outside and is free. The second one weekend of Saalbach promised to be full of surprises and did not betray expectations. The first came in Super-G: the four-time Overall Parallel Snowboard Champion wins for the fourth time in the Ski World Cup. The Czech, which we have often seen battle with ours Michela Moioli on the board, he found the right fit in really difficult conditions (rain and heat). She is just a whisker away from the winner Federica Brignone (2nd at +0.28”), who was chasing Lara Gut in the specialty rankings. On the previous weekend Wedding ring he had won the Giant Slalom: no repetition, but yet another podium for the Italian national team. Norwegian Kajsa Vickhoff Lie came third just two cents from Federica. A seventh place is enough for Lara Gut-Behrami to celebrate the fifth Super-G cup of her career; the Swiss joins Lindsey Vonn, confirming herself after last year’s success.

SUPER G Men – Red Cross celebration! Odermatt wins the Super-G cup and his teammates take all three podium places. If on the one hand there is a small regret for Marco Odermatt that he ”only” equaled the record of 13 victories in a single season, on the other hand he was able to celebrate the second Super-G specialty cup of his career. The Swiss, with the clarity of great athletes, preferred to manage the race after his exit in the Giant last week which did not affect anything other than Ingemar Stenmark’s record of consecutive victories in the discipline which still stands. This time a similar mistake could have cost him dearly because Vincent Kriechmayr he was still in contention despite the very wide margin of the Nidwalden. The dispute between the two resulted in 5th place for Odermatt and 6th for the Austrian, leaving the spotlight to other protagonists; in particular Stefan Rogentin getting his first win in CdM and the first podium for Arnaud Boisset (3rd at +0.15”). Completing the Swiss trio Loïc Meillard (2° to +0.03”) who achieved the seventh podium of the season, leaving us with many expectations for next season. For Italians the best is Paris 6th tied with Kriechmayr ahead of his teammates Bosca 10th, Casse 15th and Perathoner 22nd making his debut in CdM thanks to the gold won at the Junior World Championships.

Women’s Downhill Downhill – ”Connie you did it!”: Cornelia Hütter wins her first specialty cup at 31 in the craziest race of the season. On the Zwölferkogel of Saalbach, the day before the Austrian had thrown away her chances of winning the Super-G cup. On Sunday morning he signed a true masterpiece, thanks above all to the mess of Lara Gut who finished 17th. After Gut’s descent, the partial classification saw the Austrian ahead of the Swiss by only 6 points in the partial classic and four Austrians in the first four positions. Then something happens, you realize that maybe something up Connie can be recovered. The first to do it is the Nicol Delago (3rd at +0.49”) which ruins the landlord quartet. But it seems done, Hütter’s companions gather around her in celebration. Among them there is also Nicole Schmidhofer, the last Austrian athlete to win the Downhill Cup before the terrible injury that forced her to retire. Ilka Štuhec goes down, red light at the first half time but she is there on the tails of the Austrian. The match continues, the Slovenian continues to lose but much less than the other athletes and silence begins to fall among the Austrian national team as they look at the mega-screen. Green light at the last half time. The Austrian coach Roland Assinger almost faints, the Slovenian has recovered 37 hundredths and there are a handful of seconds left to the finish line. Red light, Ilka Štuhec 2° a +0.17”. You will ask yourself ”Why all this anguish?”. So far as Connie had she not obtained first place, Lara Gut would have won the Downhill Cup due to the points assigned between first and second place, 100 and 80 respectively which by virtue of the 6 difference would have decreed the defeat of the home favorite. Race of the Year.

Men’s Downhill Downhill – The men’s speed season ends in Saalbach as it began: a cancellation. Yet another, in the most catastrophic season since the FIS existed. The cancellation of the Saalbach descent deprived us of the only real challenge, the one between Odermatt and Cyprien Sarrazin. The two were separated by 42 points in the Downhill classification: despite the efforts of the professionals, it was not possible to take part in the race due to the conditions: combined with a snow cover battered by the heat, the safety of the athletes was not guaranteed. All in all, a decision also shared by the Frenchman Sarrazin, who recently recovered from the frightening tumble in Crans-Montana.

Briefly reviewing the season just concluded, there were several ideas that the FIS will have to discuss during the break. The first is certainly ”safety”: The White Circus has been steadily stripped of some of its most illustrious members throughout the year, many severely. The most sensational example is that of Kilde, whose career is seriously at risk after Wengen’s fall which tore his leg and severed a nerve. The second is ”calendarization”: with 16 races cancelled, only the 2019/2020 season, the Covid one, had a worse deficit. The challenge for female CdM saw Lara Gut prevail over Federica Brignone but above all over Mikaela Shiffrin: without the injury in Cortina would she have been able to keep up with the Ticino girl? Our Brignone is not convinced of this: after the Saalbach Finals, Maria Rosa Quario’s daughter accused Her Majesty that he had already put his best foot forward at the Zauchensee races, where he didn’t participate due to the flu. Second Wedding ring the American would have given up competing in the fast disciplines anyway as she was unable to handle the feat of strength which in the long run would have favored Switzerland.

Also the men’s season leaves some doubts, mostly linked to Marco Odermatt’s only real rival, the Austrian Marco Schwarz who dropped out of the game after his crash in Bormio. The duel would certainly have made the season much more exciting but the versatile Austrian asked too much of his physique who then presented him with the bill. The only certainty is that Odermatt has a clear goal of rising above anything else that has been done so far in skiing. He came close to two sensational records this year: consecutive victories in the Giant (13 vs 14 by Ingemar Stenmark) and that of victories in a single season (13 equally with Hirscher, Maier, Stenmark). We are faced with a boy who is rewriting the history of skiing and who in the coming years is likely to see him above the pantheon of the White Circus. After theSuperman by Friedrich Nietzsche it is not utopian to think ofÖdermensch: something that goes beyond the human.
