Hanshin catcher Ryutaro Umeno (32), who has torn his right shoulder muscle and is currently adjusting his menu, is taking the road to recovery one step at a time.

On the 3rd, he worked on free batting outdoors for the second consecutive day at Naruohama Stadium in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo. When catching ground balls at close range, he also returns the ball lightly. The practice continued, and he repeatedly ran between the poles with infielder Shuya Yamada (18, Sendai Ikuei), a rookie high school graduate, and infielder Ao Momosaki (18, Tokai University Kumamoto Seisho). “When I look at the faces of high school students running cool, I feel like I’ve become an old man, too.” Reporters were relieved to see him smiling while sweating profusely.

On the 10th, he increased the distance he could play catch from about 30 meters to 50 meters. “I thought I was in better shape than yesterday, so I decided to try to stretch it out.I want to gradually improve my condition.” He is never in a hurry and is progressing with his rehabilitation one step at a time each day.

When I go to Naruohama Baseball Stadium for reporting, fans sometimes ask me, “What do you think of Umeno?” He made me realize once again that he is a player that is loved by many people. This is understandable when you look at the way they respond to the press. I want to see him play in a packed Koshien stadium as soon as possible.[Hanshin person in charge = Mariko Muramatsu]
