Casper Ruud has been a constant force in the ATP over the past few years; However, his participation in tournaments Masters 1000 in 2024 has been rather discreet unlike most players top 10 of the circuit.

The Norwegian, number eight in the world, fell yesterday in Miami against the Chilean Nicolás Jarry, who for the first time will play in the quarterfinals of the competition.

The 25-year-old tennis player began his participation firmly in Miami, where he spent bye the first round. In his first match he defeated Luca van Assche and later Alejandro Fokina, before running into Jarry and ending his adventure in Miami.

Nicolás’ victory is especially meritorious, since the Santiago native must wear an adhesive tape over his nose that helps him increase air flow by more than 30 percent, and compensate for a condition that made him suffer for many years from his career as a tennis player.

The pupil of Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela achieved his ninth victory against players from the top 10 positions in the classification in his career, the most remembered being that of Carlos Alcaraz in Buenos Aires. The last Chilean to get into the top eight was Fernando González in 2004.

Daniil Medvedev, defending champion of the Masters of Miami advanced without complications to the quarterfinals after defeating Dominik Koepfer. The Spanish Car-los Alcaraz, first seed, Jannik Sinner, Grigor Dimitrov and Tomas Machac also won.

In the women’s branch, the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, winner of the tournament three times, reached the semifinals after beating the Kazakh Yulia Putinseva 7-6 (4), 1-6 and 6-3 in a rugged duel marked by a surprising electrical outage in the stadium.

At the start of the match, with Putinseva leading 2-1 in the first set, the judge announced the lack of electricity on the main court, so they had to wait to resolve the problem. Despite the tennis players’ demands to play with sunlight, the power outage made it impossible to use the hawk’s eye to check the points.
