Rostock Seawolves Look to Break Winless Streak against EWE Baskets Oldenburg on Easter Sunday

Cheered on by more than 4,000 spectators, the Rostock Seawolves want to finally break the deadlock on Easter Sunday, March 31st. After twelve defeats in a row, the Wolves will be hosting EWE Baskets Oldenburg in the easyCredit Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) in the Rostock town hall from 6:30 p.m.

“It’s brutal to pick yourself up and come back after defeats like those against Bamberg. We have recently done many things better. The throws and decisions were good, but we have to continue to work on it and be focused. We will face Oldenburg again with a team that will give everything and fight until the end. We can rely on that and the great support in the Rostock town hall,” said Seawolves coach Christian Held.

The Rostock Seawolves are still winless in 2024

“Giving up is not an option,” announced Rostock head coach after the bitter home defeat on the last match day. His team led by 17 points in the first quarter against Bamberg, but thanks to Tyler Nelson, they saved themselves into overtime with four seconds left and were left behind against the Franconians. The Wolves were clearly hungry for their first, long-awaited victory in 2024, but in the end they lacked the decisive bite.

Oldenburg represents a special challenge. The coaching team Christian and Ralph Held have spent many years in the city on the Hunte and celebrated successes there. Since February, Oldenburg have only won twice out of seven games – against Crailsheim (80:58) and against Heidelberg (99:77). On Tuesday, Lower Saxony lost 85:100 in Bonn. Despite these fluctuations in form, Christian Held warns against the EWE Baskets.

“Oldenburg is a very good and very deep team that is struggling with a lot of injuries this season. Charles Manning Jr., Kenneth Ogbe and Deane Williams were recently missing. So there are a few question marks behind these players. Nevertheless, the Oldenburgers have a complete team. This underlines how deep the squad is. In January they signed another power forward, Artur Konontsuk,” said the Rostock coach.

Oldenburg’s injury-plagued squad has a total of 14 players who average at least six points this season. It was not uncommon for coach Pedro Calles to have to reorganize the rotation and send other players onto the field. “When Oldenburg gets going and has rhythm, like against Heidelberg, for example, then they destroy the opponent. Against Bonn, however, it was clear that they had problems with the roles – typical things that occur in teams with a lot of injury concerns. “Nevertheless, Oldenburg is a top team whose place in the table is deceptive,” said Christian Held.
