However, there was no word on the Aachen native’s whereabouts at 15th place in the table. discussed controversially by the BBL. One day after the 86:88 defeat on Saturday at second-to-last Academics Heidelberg, the Seawolves’ board of directors and supervisory board discussed “in detail the current sporting situation,” as the Mecklenburgers said in a statement. At the end of the conversation, those responsible agreed to stick with the coach despite eleven bankruptcies in a row.

“We now have eleven finals ahead of us, with Christian Held as head coach of the Rostock Seawolves. In the current situation, it is important to tackle this challenge together as a team and overcome it. Christian Held enjoys our trust for this task,” explained CEO André Jürgens.

Seawolves threaten to fall into the relegation zone

The Rostock team, who have been plagued by many injury problems this season, have only celebrated one more win than Heidelberg, so the fall to a relegation zone should no longer be averted if further defeats occur. Despite the precarious situation, sports director Jens Hakanowitz is convinced that Held will lead the Seawolves to stay in the league.

“We experienced and celebrated great successes with Christian, such as promotion to the BBL or Europe. We will also overcome these difficult times together,” he said on Monday – and followed up on Tuesday in the “Nordmagazin”: “It’s the right one Decision, but not a self-evident one.” A separation would have been easy, says Hakanowitz. The team and coach still have a stable and trusting relationship.

Held: “An extraordinary step”

Held thanked “for the trust placed in me. Such a situation is anything but normal, but an extremely extraordinary step. I really appreciate it,” explained the coach. The 35-year-old moved to the Seawoves as an assistant coach in 2020. A year later he was promoted to head coach and led the Mecklenburg team to promotion to the BBL in his debut season as the main trainer.

After the Rostock team easily managed to stay in the league in their first Bundesliga series, they now face a sporting battle for survival in the remaining games.

“For my part and on behalf of the team, I can say that we will invest everything in continuing to give 100 percent and, together with the fans in the town hall, but also away, achieve this great goal of staying in the league and that we will continue to play first division basketball Rostock,” said Held.

There are eleven games left to play. According to Hakanowitz, three to four wins are necessary to stay in the BBL. The Seawolves have their first chance to achieve one on Friday (8 p.m.). Then it’s against Bamberg in our own hall.
