Dallas has only added linebacker Eric Kendricks to a one-year, $3.5 million deal. The Cowboys added Kendricks and released Leighton Vander Esch, the 2018 first-round pick, with a no-pass designation for another neck injury he suffered last year.

Vander Esch announced his retirement this Monday, six days after he was released and after spending six seasons in the NFL. The player missed 12 games last season due to another series of neck injuries, the fourth since 2019.

“I realized that I can no longer adhere to the standard of excellence that the football professional. And I say this with the pain of my heart: I am medically retired from the NFL,” Vander Esch said in a statement.

Prescott, a three-time Pro Bowl selection, has been a starter since his rookie year after Tony Romo was injured in the 2016 preseason. He went from being drafted in the fourth round to becoming Offensive Rookie of the Year, leading Dallas to finish leading the NFC.

The Cowboys have failed to advance beyond the divisional round four times, the team has not played in the NFC Championship game since they won the Super Bowl after the 1995 season.
