Robinho goes to Brazil’s Supreme Court to avoid prison

While on Wednesday the magistrates of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) had decided by a large majority of 9 votes out of 11 that Robinho could be imprisoned in Brazil – a decision “with immediate effect” – the ex-footballer’s defense decided to go to the Supreme Court of Brazil to prevent him from going to prison, one of his lawyers told AFP on Thursday.

His lawyers presented a request to the Supreme Court for “habeas corpus” so that he remains at liberty until all possible remedies are exhausted.

Sentenced in 2017 to 9 years in prison by Italian justice following a gang rape committed on a 23-year-old woman in a Milanese nightclub, Robinho, 40, had taken refuge in Brazil at the time of the trial, where he enjoyed his freedom, while remaining discreet, near Santos, where he grew up. The sentence was upheld by the Italian Court of Cassation in January 2022.
