Road to Paris 2024: Mexico’s National Archery Team Sets Sights on Olympic Success

After five days of arduous and exhausting competition in which they left their soul in each arrow, this Sunday the National Archery Team successfully concluded towards the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, an internal control that defined the recurve specialists who will represent our country in the competitions to be held during the current year, including the great event.

There are a total of six goalkeepers, three per branch, who will make up the always distinguished Aztec team at an international level: Alejandra Valencia Trujillo, Ángela Ruiz Rosales and Ana Paula Vázquez Flores in the women’s team; Matías Grande Kalionchiz, Carlos Javier Rojas López and Bruno Martínez Wing in the men’s.

The bronze medalist in Tokyo 2020 and world runner-up in Berlin 2023, will be the captain and in charge of leading a legion of young and talented athletes who imposed conditions in the event that took place at the National Center for the Development of Sports Talents and High Performance (CNAR).

It was not an easy path to navigate for the now national team, since in the complex belonging to the National Commission of Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE), the 12 best arrows in the country met (six per branch), which included big names, such as the Olympic medal winners: Aída Román Arroyo, Luis Álvarez Murillo and Mariana Avitia Martínez.

Qualification phases, Olympic rounds and the decisive round robin were part of the electrifying process in which the archers gave themselves to shoot their best shots against their compatriots and the national elite of this discipline, in which Mexico stands out as a world power and one of the great rivals to defeat in the world panorama.

Those who were successful in this fourth and final stage of the national selection must report to the CNAR next week to begin the concentration that has Paris 2024 as its main objective, but which will first present complicated tests such as the Medellín Pan American Championship and the Serial of World Cups, both with a start date in April.

Alejandra Valencia, Ángela Ruiz and Ana Paula Vázquez already have their presence assured in the summer fair, so their motto in the following months will be to get together as a team, since it will be the first time that these three brilliant arrows come together in one team, which also has the Olympic and Pan American championship experience of Vázquez, as well as the skills of Ruiz, who at just 17 years old is already an international medalist.

The greatest responsibility in the short term will fall on the throws of Matías Grande, Javier Rojas and Bruno Martínez, who will have three opportunities to get the team place: the Pan American in Medellín, the World Cup in Turkey and via the Federation ranking International (World Archery). In this branch, Mexico only has the individual quota that Grande Kalionchiz achieved with silver metal at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

The six goalkeepers ranked from fourth to sixth in both categories will be active in different preparation tournaments and will be eligible to replace any of the starters if necessary.
