River Plate suffered an unexpected defeat last Friday against Independiente Rivadavia in a friendly played in Mendoza. Martín Demichelis put together a substitute XI and left his figures on the bench, including Miguel Ángel Borja, the team’s top scorer this season. Before the match, the coach had given the team two days of rest: Saturday and Sunday.
After the defeat, Demichelis removed the rest days and asked the players to train upon returning to Buenos Aires to prepare for next Friday’s game against Huracán for the League Cup. As it became known this Monday, several members of the team were upset with the decision and one of them expressed his displeasure to the coach.
“One starter got angrier than the rest and had a louder talk with the coach. Something that was fixed and stayed there,” said Hernán Castillo on Radio Continental AM 950.
The Argentine journalist continued with his information and revealed that the footballer who got upset was Miguel Ángel Borja. The Colombian forward had a trip planned with his family over the weekend. Apparently there was a complaint from the scorer, but everything ended well between him and Demichelis.
“The player who complained because Demichelis decided to suspend the days off after the defeat with Independiente Rivadavia was Borja, since he had planned a trip with his family. Then they both talked and everything was fine,” Castillo added on the radio program.
In this 2024 season, Borja has 11 goals in 12 official matches. In the 10 of the League Cup, he scored 10 goals, including a hat trick against Vélez Sarsfield and a double against Independiente Rivadavia. With that scoring level he expected to be called up to the National Team by Néstor Lorenzo, but the coach left him out again.
