River Plate Aiming to Make History in Argentine Super Cup Final against Estudiantes de La Plata

River Plate won the Argentine Super Cup twice and will have the opportunity to become the tournament’s top winner

The Argentine Super Cup, a competition that brings the winner of the Professional League and the winner of the Argentine Cup face to face, will have a final that could leave a historic result. Starting at 9:10 p.m., at the Mario Alberto Kempes stadium (Córdoba), River Plate will clash against Estudiantes de La Plata in the tenth edition of this competition.

This tournament, which has the 2020 edition pending as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, has Boca Juniors and Millonario as its main winners, both with two titles each. In this way, Martín Demichelis’ men will have the unique opportunity to become the biggest solo winners. Pincha, for its part, will be the first time to dispute this definition.

Núñez’s men lifted this trophy in two of the four opportunities they had. In the first two finals, those then led by Marcelo Gallardo missed the opportunity. The first was in 2015, at the Bicentennial of San Juan, the scene where Néstor Apuzzo’s Huracán, winner of the 2014 Argentine Cup, defeated the Muñeco team, winners of the 2014 Final Tournament, 1-0, thanks to a goal from the Chilean Edson Puch.

Two years later, in 2017, glory eluded them again. This time they succumbed by a landslide against Lanús, winner of the 2016 Transition Tournament. Those led by Jorge Almirón won at the Ciudad de La Plata Stadium with goals from Lautaro Acosta, Nicolás Pasquini and José Sand.

The third time was finally the charm for River Plate. And so much waiting had its reward, since this title had a very special flavor because the opponent was his lifelong rival. In 2018, at the Malvinas Argentinas stadium in Mendoza, Marcelo Gallardo’s team, winner of the 2017 Argentine Cup, defeated Boca Juniors 2-0 (winner of the 16/17 Super League). Although it should have been played in 2020, the definition between Millonario (winner of the 2019 Argentine Cup) and Racing (Superliga 18/19) was postponed for a year and at the Madre de Ciudades Stadium in Santiago del Estero those from Muñeco gave a sample of football to beat Juan Antonio Pizzi’s team 5-0 thanks to Julián Álvarez, Rafael Santos Borré, Matías Suárez, Nicolás De La Cruz and Leonel Miranda (against).

The last time that those from Núñez and Estudiantes de La Plata met was on July 15, 2023, within the framework of date 25 of the last Professional League. On that occasion, Martín Demichelis’s team won 3-1 at the Monumental stadium with goals from Lucas Beltrán, the Uruguayan Nicolás De La Cruz and Esequiel Barco (Mauro Méndez scored for Pincha).

Xeneize won this award when they won on penalties against Rosario Central in the Malvinas Argentina and when they beat Patronato 3-0 in the Madre de Ciudades. Those from La Ribera, before, succumbed three times: on penalties against Arsenal, a 4-0 beating with San Lorenzo and the Superclásico against River in Mendoza.
