Rising Membership Numbers in Sports Clubs Across Schleswig-Holstein

As of: March 12, 2024 12:00 p.m

Sports clubs in the country gained around 25,000 memberships last year. According to the State Sports Association (LSV), numerous people returned to the clubs after the corona pandemic. The increase is particularly large among children up to the age of six.

The positive trend in memberships in sports clubs continues – the numbers have been rising since 2022. As of January 1, 2024, the clubs in the country recorded another 25,764 new memberships compared to the previous year. That’s an increase of 3.37 percent. A total of 789,604 Schleswig-Holsteiners are registered in a sports club.

A total of a million people take part in offers

According to the LSV, there are also around 250,000 people who, for example, take part in individual courses and other alternative formats as well as sports activities organized by clubs in schools, daycare centers, senior citizens’ facilities or companies that do not appear in the statistics. “We are moving over a million people in the clubs organized in the LSV,” says LSV President Hans-Jakob Tiessen. He is pleased that things are continuing to improve after the difficult phase of the corona pandemic.

Ten percent more members among those under six years old

The increase is particularly large among children and young people. In the under six age group alone, the number of memberships has increased by more than ten percent. Overall, the increase in membership in the age group up to 18 years is almost six percent. It is pleasing that more children and young people are participating in sports clubs, said LSV President Tiessen – even more than before the pandemic. The youngest people in particular suffered from a lack of exercise during the Corona restrictions. “Adequate exercise, play and sport are essential for their development,” says Tiessen. The number of members also increased in almost all other age groups. For example, among 27 to 40-year-olds there was an increase of 5.86 percent compared to the previous year, and among those over 60 it was 2.33 percent. Only among 19 to 27 year olds was there a minimal decline of 0.49 percent.

Trainers and volunteers wanted

The state sports association hopes that the positive trend in membership numbers will now make voluntary roles in sports clubs more attractive.

Among the individual sports, darts recorded the greatest growth: Here the number of memberships almost doubled with an increase of 91 percent. This is followed by basketball, where membership numbers are increasing by around 15 percent and judo by almost twelve percent.
