Reviving Gijón Baseball: The Rise of SBS Baseball Academy and Miners Club

Gijón baseball is not exactly experiencing its best moments. Years ago the city had a team in the top national category, but those times passed and now the SBS Baseball Academy works with young boys to try to put Gijón back among the best.

This academy currently has 9 years of activity, but has recently signed a collaboration agreement with the Miners club to carry out mutual work. The academy is run by Roberto Díaz, national coach and a well-known man not only in regional baseball, but throughout Spain.

According to Díaz, “the concept of a baseball academy, as it is styled in the United States, is something difficult for the sports culture of Spain. Even so, it was able to materialize with the efforts of a few, who like almost everything in the minority sports of this country, they do it without profit and with a great personal effort to carry out these types of projects”. SBS is headquartered in a 400-square-meter warehouse located in Castiello that has 2 batting tunnels, 2 bullpens for pitchers, a baseball pitching machine, a softball pitching machine, and even a small gym.

Its operation is not like that of a normal club, since it organizes trips to play tournaments. Thus, in April it will take two teams, an under-14 and an under-16, to Prague to compete in the European Pony League, which will include players from France, the United States, the Czech Republic and England. A highly prestigious tournament attended by invitation, with 16 teams in each category. It is not the first time that the Gijón academy has taken part in the tournament and last year it achieved a creditable fourth place, even surpassing national teams.

SBS has a Baseball Sports Training Center that currently has 12 kids from different backgrounds who train 5-6 days a week. In addition, it also organizes various tournaments whose matches are normally played on the La Morgal field. There it is planned that between the 23rd and 26th of next May the “European Pony League sub-12 Bronco Series” will be held, a tournament that is equivalent to the European Pony League championship of the category and in which the champion will be qualifies to play in Texas for the under-12 Pony World Series that will be held at the end of July. On the other hand, in October the qualifications for the next under-14 and under-16 Pony League will be held, which give places to compete in the Pony Europeans in Prague in 2025.

The Miners club, for its part, was formed in 2022 and in just one year it already won the regional titles in under-13 and under-15. Together they hope that Gijón baseball will shine again.
