Rep. Adam Schiff and Former MLB Star Steve Garvey Advance to General Election in California Senate Race

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and former Republican Major League Baseball star Steve Garvey were the top two vote-getters in California’s Super Tuesday Senate primary, advancing to the general election of November.

The two candidates will face off after defeating Reps. Katie Porter (D-Calif.) and Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) in the competitive race to replace the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) in the Senate.

“What you’re all feeling tonight is what it feels like to hit a home run,” Garvey, a 75-year-old former gold gloveman and political newcomer, told supporters Tuesday night.

“Keep in mind this is the first game of a doubleheader,” Garvey added, referring to his November face-off against Schiff. “So keep the evening of November 5 open because we will celebrate again.”

Garvey, a 10-time MLB All-Star who played for the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers, attributed his advancement to the “belief shared with me that California is no longer the heart of America.” .

The current senator in the hotly contested seat, Laphonza Butler, was appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom and is not running for re-election.

Garvey now faces the difficult task of directly competing with Schiff in the deep blue of California.

“I will go to Washington to build consensus,” the former first baseman said.

“I will start by going to the 99 senators, reaching out to them and asking them to work with me in the best interest of the people of these United States,” he added, emphasizing that the results of the primary gave the feeling that he did it the day he was “called up by the Dodgers, went to the clubhouse and put on the Dodgers uniform for the first time.”

Schiff, who was censured by House Republicans last year for “misleading the American public” over allegations of collusion between former President Donald Trump and Russia, raised $29.8 million of dollars in contributions in mid-February for his Senate campaign, in addition to the $21 million allocated. he had hidden it in his House account, according to ABC News.

“They say in the general election we’re going to suppress the party, but you know where that comes from,” Garvey said of his skeptics. “It comes from those who believe in the status quo.”
