Remembering the Legacy of Former Belgian Striker Jean-Paul Colonval

Former Belgian striker Jean-Paul Colonval died at the age of 84 this Thursday evening. During his career which lasted more than fifteen years in the 50s, 60s and 70s, he established himself as a formidable scorer. He also finished top scorer in the Belgian championship during the 1964-1965 season while playing for Tilleur. At the time, he had scored 25 goals in 23 games.

A performance which opened the doors of Daring for him from 1966. The experience ended short at the Machtens stadium since the following season, he joined Standard for two seasons. With Rouches, he won the Belgian championship title in 1969 before returning to Molenbeek, before ending his career at Racing Jet as player-coach.

He then had several stints as a coach, notably at Sporting Charleroi or in Iceland. He ended his immense career with a position as technical director at Mons in 2005. He left his position two years later following disagreements with management to join Johan Vermeersch’s FC Brussels as technical advisor.

But it was also on the small screen that Jean-Paul Colonval made himself known to the general public. In the 90s, when Canal + broadcast certain Belgian D1 matches for which the channel had acquired the rights, he formed a famous commentator duo with André Remy. The pair lasted sixteen years, 375 meetings exactly, on the channels of Canal +, then Be tv.
