Reflecting on the Evolution of Danish Badminton Teams Over Time

By bike along fields and forest on slightly wet and muddy paths the approx. 3 km to Den Store Hal.

The sky is blue. The sun shines. The birds whistle and use the bird bath in my garden. Wonderful to look at while eating breakfast.

Christine from Beder-Malling, one of nearly 14,000 followers of Badmintonbladet, asked me on Tuesday on messenger if I knew about the record for the oldest and youngest Danish series team.

In her club, their newly promoted DS team that has survived season #1 has a pretty high average age, but she didn’t mention theirs!

I “got around” to close that door pretty quickly. Pardon!

On 25 October 2015, I was part of VBK’s Denmark series team with an average age of 45.4 years.

Beat it, badminton friends!

Now we are in 2024 and VBK1 is greatly rejuvenated, thank God. The youngest in today’s match is 16 years old. Yes, okay then there are the undersigned, mostly mix-reserve, aged 58.

It has been 40 years since I made my debut on Kolding’s DS team. Always a nice room time!

Back then, the top four levels looked like this:

1 x 1. division – 8 hold

1 x 2. division – 8 hold

2 x 3. division – 20  hold

4 x Danish series – 40 teams.

In 1985, 619 clubs were members of Badminton Denmark with a total of approximately 170,000 members.

In 2019, Badminton Denmark included 682 clubs and approximately 94,000 members.

The average number per club has fallen from 275 (1985) to 138 (2019).

Arrived in the hall. Clear. As always in good time. Really good time.

Some behavioral routines never change!¯_(ツ)_/¯
