Rediscovering Basketball: An Interview with a Coach on His Journey to Find a New Project

I found myself without a contract in July and there were no more opportunities on the market. I took the opportunity to have different experiences, to go and discuss with fellow coaches… I am here in La Rochelle (Wednesday March 13), I went to Saint-Quentin, to the JDA (Dijon), I had the chance to interact with coaches from BCM (Gravelines) but also from N1 clubs in the north. I also did a skills assessment, I followed management training, executive and coaching training. I had the opportunity to meet people like Laurent Buffard, Antoine Rigaudeau and Jacques Vernerey. And then I was able to take time with my family and it’s true that after 17 years at this pace of matches every weekend, it really did a lot of good.

Are you hoping to find a position for the start of next season?

It is the objective. I’m not closing any doors but my priority is to find a project. It’s up to me to synthesize everything I’ve observed to define my new game plan, my new way of coaching. Because basketball is evolving enormously.

And why this particular visit to La Rochelle?

I wanted to see what Julien (Cortey) offers, which is very coherent. It also gives me great pleasure to see Johan Löfberg again, whom I had in Denain. I also wanted to see how the business world works, to draw parallels between sports coaching and what is happening there. I was able to be immersed, I made the most of the time I had here.

The fact of seeing you in Gaston-Neveur implies that there is no, or no longer, bitterness compared to what happened two years ago?
