Real Madrid’s leadership was able to overcome the faith of Zunder Palencia (78-86)

The leader extended his winning streak against Zunder Palencia with his sixth straight victory. Real Madrid returned to the Castilian capital almost 30 years after its last presence in the unforgettable Ciudad de Palencia summer tournament and successfully defended its leadership against a rival that made faith its great argument to fight until the end.

Real Madrid arrived in Palencia warned. The Castilians had won four of their last ten games, Unicaja had won in Granada and the defense of the leadership was serious. That is why the whites appeared with enough seriousness to prevent Luis Guil’s team from being infected by the lively atmosphere of the Palencia field. With the city divided between the match and the Palm Sunday procession, La Borriquilla, Madrid was the team that has already forgotten the disconnection it experienced after lifting the Cup.

The locals were devoured by their starting nerves when only Madrid played. Zunder’s first seven shots found no reward and if four losses were added to that, the leader escaped too soon (0-12). If the people from Palencia have changed anything since Guil arrived, in addition to three changes to the squad, it is that now all the games compete. They are never deleted from the game and even less so at home. The Sevillian coach ordered a zonal defense and Palencia hid the first hole. The second was deeper. A 0-13 to start the second quarter reflected the real difference between two teams that live in different worlds. Only Edy Tavares’ gross salary would be enough to cover the Palencia team’s budget for the entire season. Madrid deciphered the zonal defense, Deck mixed his seriousness with points and the differences were always above ten points.

The proof of how Madrid took the game came in the third quarter. There was no truce. Between Campazzo (15 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists) and Musa (21 points and 2 rebounds) they were responsible for raising the differences to over twenty. With the match, in theory, decided and with salvation two wins ahead with only eight days remaining, Zunder Palencia made another show of faith to return to the match. Van der Vuurst, Hands, Haarms… the Euroleague players looked like the Palencias. Madrid began to worry about the referees and the differences began to reduce. They tightened to the limit. Less than five minutes away, the Castilians were closer than ever (72-75). They even had one possession to tie with four minutes left. There Madrid said enough.
