Rapid Vienna and LASK battle to a draw: Linzers continue winless streak

A few series continued with this. The Linzers are still without a win in 2024 and were unable to win in the sixth championship match either. In contrast, Rapid extended their unbeaten competitive game series to seven games. At home, the Viennese have not lost against LASK eight times in a row, but the athletes survived the last five direct duels without defeat.

The fans of the West Block protested with banners and chants against the league’s new sanctions announced on Monday. In addition, the ÖFB team boss Ralf Rangnick, who was sitting in the stands, also received verbal criticism. The German had decided not to nominate Niklas Hedl, Marco Grüll and Guido Burgstaller for the upcoming course in Marbella due to the videos that emerged showing verbal gaffes from Rapid players after the 3-0 derby win against Austria. Burgstaller, Grüll and Thorsten Schick were still missing for the Viennese.

Usor misses LASK chance

After slightly chaotic conditions when the fans arrived due to a late special train, the hosts almost made a serious mistake. After a corner of his own, Moritz Oswald lost the ball to Moses Usor on a return attempt on the halfway line. The Linz striker hastily finished from almost 50 meters, but failed to get a shot over Hedl on goal (11th). Six minutes later, a Ljubicic shot went to the goalkeeper.

GEPA/Armin Rauthner Usor hastily finished winning the ball; it was one of the few good chances in the game

Rapid’s offensive play was very limited, the most noticeable being winger Isak Jansson, who missed the ball from the five-point corner in the only good chance before the break (23′). The Linzers were a little more dangerous. A Usor shot was deflected towards a corner (36′), before which there was a short interruption due to objects being thrown onto the field. A little later, Rapid’s Terence Kongolo tested his goalie with an unwanted return from a cross (41′).

Rapidly more powerful after the break

After the restart, the home team started more powerfully in front of 13,400 fans and initially dominated the action. A penalty was rightly not whistled because of a swoop by Jansson in the penalty area (54th). Shortly afterwards, the Swede and Fally Mayulu found half chances, but were unable to finish. After an hour, Linz came back with a Ljubicic header parried by Hedl. On the other hand, Leopold Querfeld, who was once again captain, didn’t miss a header (69′).

At that point, Ismail Seydi was already on the field, making his debut for the Rapid professionals in the 67th minute and providing fresh impetus to the offensive. But he couldn’t reward himself with a goal. That’s why the home supporters, who once again made a negative impression by throwing a cannon in the 77th minute, could only celebrate winning a point. Late goals like the 1-1 in Linz and 3-3 at the Allianz Stadium at the end of October failed to materialize this time.

Voices about the game

Robert Klauss (Rapid coach): “We played a good game and deserved to win. We didn’t allow much defensively. Overall, we are not happy with the result because we would have had a chance to win. You can tell that we lack a bit of individual quality up front.”

Thomas Sageder (LASK coach): “I think we can live well with a point in Vienna. We have good young players up front who don’t intentionally waste chances. A certain level of uncertainty among our offensive players is evident. Of course we’re not happy with our spring, but now it’s about collecting points in the direct duels. No one is interested in what happened before.”
