Racing Copa Sudamericana Debut in Jeopardy as Key Players Suffer Injuries and Setbacks

With little margin for error, Gustavo Costas needs everyone to face the final stretch of Racing’s difficult fight to enter the quarterfinals of the League Cup. In that context, the loss that was confirmed this Friday is important in the Academy, beyond the fact that he was going to go to the bench in the next game. According to the medical report published by the club, Johan Carbonero suffered muscle overload in the femoral biceps of his left leg and will miss this Saturday’s game against Central Córdoba, starting at 7 p.m.

In addition, it is a doubt for Thursday’s match against Sportivo Luqueño in Paraguay, in the team’s debut in the Copa Sudamericana. But the Colombian was not the only one to fall from grace, since Iván Pillud was also ruled out: the veteran defender suffers from tendinopathy in the insertion of the right adductor.

Carbonero came happy. He had returned to scoring against San Martín de Burzaco, for the Argentine Cup, with a performance that was close to the best version of him. It had been difficult for him to raise his level after a tear, another of the several injuries he had recently. Although what he had was not something serious, it was enough to stop him just when he was beginning to improve his confidence.

“I turned off a little, but I turned back on, because I always can, I always could and I always will”, Carbonero quoted a phrase by Mario Benedetti, a Uruguayan writer. He published those words in an Instagram story that conveyed his renewed spirit after the match against the Primera B Metropolitana rival, for the Argentine Cup.

Against San Martín de Burzaco, the Colombian started for the second time this year. He had previously played from the start on the first day of the League Cup, in the 1-0 loss against Unión. He had been underperforming and tore himself during practice in the days after that game. It took him a lot to get back in good football shape, however he reappeared well in the ST of the tie with Defensa y Justicia. After that commitment, the winger took advantage of the rotation that Costas made against San Martín and played well.

The absences due to injury of Carbonero and Pillud were added to those of Gabriel Rojas and Nacho Galván, who broke down during the crossing with San Martín de Burzaco. Gabi had a tear in her left femoral biceps and Nacho had a sprain in his left ankle. The good news for Costas is that he will recover four players after not having them in the Argentine Cup premiere. They are Augustin Almond, Juan Fernando Quintero, Gabriel Arias and Juan Nardoni.

The former Boca midfielder recovered from a tear in the semimembranous hamstring of his right leg (he was not in the last three games), while Juanfer returned from the Colombian national team, the goalkeeper from Chile and the midfielder from Argentina’s Under 23 team. Of the four, three will start in Santiago del Estero, except Nardoni.

What Costas had said about Carbonero after the Argentine Cup match

“Carbonero is getting more and more confident. He needs to play. It’s no excuse, but a lot of guys came who hadn’t played for a long time and others with problems like Zuculini’s knee. They lacked game rhythm.”Costas said in the press conference he gave after the 3-0 against San Martín. The Colombian returned to goal after almost a year and a half. His previous score was in mid-October 2022, in the 2-0 win over Colón. After that torn cruciate ligament suffered in 2023, the Academy winger was dogged by muscular mishaps that did not leave him alone.

Regarding Pillud, due to this injury he will not go to the bench for the first time in the semester. Up to this point he was a relief card in all the games of the year, worse with a curiosity: the 37-year-old defender never entered.

Possible formation of Racing against Central Córdoba

Injuries aside, Gustavo Costas would present this formation to visit Central Córdoba this Saturday, from 7:00 p.m.: Gabriel Arias Tobías Rubio, Marco Di Cesare, Agustín García Basso; Santiago Solari, Santiago Sosa, Agustín Almendra, Facundo Mura; Juanfer Quintero; Maximiliano Salas and Maravilla Martínez.
