Quebecers Shine in the NCAA March Madness Tournament: A Look at the 2024 Edition

The conference championships have all taken place in the NCAA on the women’s and men’s sides: so now it is time to make way for the big spring dance, the March Madness. On the occasion of the 2024 edition of the national women’s and men’s tournaments, we can count 10 Quebecers among the lot of confirmed participants, who will have the opportunity – from Thursday March 21 – to represent the province on the most major college basketball scene in the United States.

Peter Yannopoulos from RDS first did the counting: there will be four participants on the girls’ table, then six among the boys.

In Canada, few pools of basketball talent are more vibrant than that of Montreal, while 16% of Canadian players who operate in the men’s NCAA circuit come from the Quebec metropolis, which is more than any city in the country. . However, Ontario still reigns at the top when it comes to the best exhibited provinces among our southern neighbors.

Within this group, there are Montrealers Quincy Guerrier, Tyrese Samuel, Keeshawn Barthélémy, Ryan Young and Luke Hunger, as well as Gatineau’s Enoch Kalambay, as guests at the March Madness.

University of Illinois Fighting Illini winger, Quincy Guerrier, is a name well known to Quebec crowds, and he represents the Canadian with the greatest total of games played in the history of the NCAA! Some of Illinois’ top players fell in battle, and Quincy took a step forward this season to help lead the Fighting Illini to the 2015 Conference Championship final. Big Ten.

The University of Illinois defeated the University of Wisconsin on Sunday night 93-87 to earn the third seed in the Eastern portion of this end-of-season tournament. L’Associated Press also gives them the rating of 10th best team in the country, with excellent chances of making it to the end.

For its part, Tyrese Samuel is one of the leading figures on coach Todd Golden’s roster for the Florida Gators, also leading them to the conference finals SEC. Samuel didn’t have as much success as Guerrier, losing 86-67 to the Auburn Tigers, but the Gators will still begin March Madness in seventh place in the South Group.

On the American west coast, the Oregon Ducks were able to defeat the Buffaloes of the University of Colorado – his former school – 75-68 to offer another experience of March Madness has Keeshawn Barthelemybut the latter unfortunately did not participate in the conference tournament in the Pac-12 due to a broken ankle. THE senior likely to watch the rest of the Ducks’ run from the bench, too.

Regarding the conference USAthe Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers won the championship title for the first time since 2013. Le Gatinois Enoch Kalambay is on the rise in his campaign junior and had a definite impact coming off the bench for the Hilltoppers, 15th in the South portion.

The Duke Blue Devils will act as the fourth seed in the South section of the table, despite their recent 74-69 defeat at the hands of the North Carolina State Wolfpack. Kyle Filipowski, Tyrese Proctor and Mark Mitchell may be leading the way at Duke, but let’s not forget that Ryan Young has been playing there since 2022, although in a lesser role.

The Northwestern University Huskies would not be where they are in 2024 without the contribution of Luke Hunger, a sophomore 6’10” Montrealer, who knows how to demonstrate size and tenacity under the basket. The Huskies are in ninth place in the bracket East.
