Promoting Pickleball: A Mix of Badminton, Tennis, and Paddle Tennis

Making pickleball known, a sport that mixes badminton, tennis and paddle tennis, is the objective of the promotion day that will take place on Saturday, March 23 at the Samuel Ferrer sports center promoted by Luis Antonio Rosillo and which will be taught by Eduardo Martínez Sanchiz, in which the Cuenca City Council collaborates.

From 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., no prior registration is necessary, but anyone interested can come throughout the day. As for the recipients, it is indicated from the age of ten to adulthood, and younger boys or girls who can handle themselves with the use of a racket or paddle can go.

The Councilor for Sports, Charo Rodríguez, highlighted that “we are delighted to support any initiative that serves to promote sport and physical activity, and in this case we are talking about a new sport that is already having a lot of acceptance, so I’m sure it will also hook our city.”

For his part, Luis Antonio Rosillo, promoter of the day, explains that “it is a very dynamic sport that does not involve excessive travel nor is it very harmful, which can be an incentive for those who want to try it out.” As he explains, “we would like pickleball to begin to have a following in the city and an association or club can be created,” adding that “we are already working on carrying out training courses.”

According to Rosillo, it is played on a court with dimensions and markings similar to that of badminton, with a net the height of a tennis or paddle tennis court, with paddles that are somewhat thinner than paddle tennis ones, without ropes or holes, and with a ball. hard plastic with holes, “which makes it not excessively fast.” Although it can be played individually, it is usually played in doubles, often mixed, and in it “technique, placement and hitting take precedence over strength and speed.”
