Who will be playing Championship football next season and who will be celebrating Premier League survival? The battle to stay in the top flight is, well, complicated to say the least.

Nottingham Forest’s four-point deduction for breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules (PSR) means they drop into the relegation zone, one point behind Luton Town.

Only five points separate Forest and the three teams immediately above them – Luton, Everton and Brentford – with Burnley and Sheffield United five and eight points adrift of safety respectively. Do the Clarets have renewed hope of survival, now?

While Forest have received their punishment, any appeal could complicate matters for them.

Everton, meanwhile, still face an anxious wait after being charged by the Premier League in January for alleged breaches in their accounts for 2022-23.

If they are found to have breached financial rules, they also face a points deduction. A verdict is not expected until April and would be subject to appeal.

Any appeals could take that process to 24 May, the week after the season concludes on 19 May, although the belief is any appeal would be sorted before the final day.

In November, Everton were immediately docked 10 points for breaking PSR in the three-year period to 2021-22. However, that punishment was reduced to six points after an appeal.
