Potential Financial Fair Play Sanctions Threaten Leicester City’s Premier League Return

Leicester City seemed close to returning to the Premier League, but a decision by the authorities is likely to call that into question. The club is in fact in the crosshairs of the commission in charge of financial fair play.

Leicester City are currently second in the Championship, tied on points with Leeds United and with a game in hand. Suffice it to say that the Foxes seem in a position to re-enter the Premier League, just one season after their shock relegation at the end of the 2022-2023 season.

But things could quickly turn sour for Leicester City. Indeed, the 2016 English champion club is accused of having violated financial fair play. The Premier League has mandated an independent commission, which targets Leicester City for breaches of the rules during last season.

Leicester could therefore, if these breaches are confirmed by the committee, be subject to a withdrawal of points. England is not joking with these sanctions: Nottingham Forest and Everton have already been targeted recently, and Manchester City remains under threat.

A year after a relegation experienced like an earthquake, the club owned by King Power could therefore still take a serious blow to the head and lose precious points in the race to come back. “The procedure will take place in accordance with a timetable set by the Commission”, we read on Sky Sports.

“Leicester City will go before an independent commission for alleged breaches of Profitability and Sustainability (RPS) rules and for failing to submit their audited financial accounts to the League.” Wout Faes and his teammates will follow this closely…
