Spanish police today raided several buildings of the Spanish football association RFEF in a major operation. At least six people were arrested, reports AP news agency. Reuters assumes seven arrests.

A residence of former federation president Luis Rubiales in southern Granada was also raided. He was not arrested himself, although he is being investigated by the judiciary.

Corruption and money laundering

The police actions today are part of a major operation to tackle corruption, forgery and money laundering by the Spanish Football Association.

One of the most notable allegations concerns the decision to play the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia. This has been happening since 2020 and reportedly earns the Spanish association 40 million euros per edition.

In a tapped telephone conversation, Rubiales is said to have discussed “millions in commissions” with former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué.

ANPRubiales will leave the Spanish court in September 2023

It is not the first time that former federation chairman Rubiales has been negatively reported in the news. He was the center of a national riot last fall after giving football star Jenni Hermoso an unsolicited kiss on the lips.

After initially refusing to resign as chairman, he called it quits in September. Not much later, he was suspended for three years by FIFA. He appealed against that decision.
