Police Arrest 22 People in Prostitution Ring Involving Foreign Women in Lecce

With the accusations of criminal association aimed at the exploitation of prostitution, enslavement and trafficking, perpetrated against foreign women of various nationalities, the policemen of the Lecce Police Headquarters carried out a custody order this morning, 12 March precautionary measure signed by the judge for preliminary investigations Antonio Gatto at the request of the prosecutors Giovanna Cannarile for the District Anti-Mafia Directorate, and Erika Masetti and Rosaria Petrolo, of the ordinary prosecutor’s office, against twenty-two people, twenty-one of Bulgarian nationality, in prison, and a 51-year-old of Porto Cesareo, under house arrest. The girls, according to the accusatory theorem accepted by the GIP, arrived in Italy deceived by the promise of a job but, once they arrived in Lecce, they were forced into prostitution and beaten, even with baseball bats, if they refused.
The logistical headquarters of the association was an apartment in the center of the Salento capital, in which the police had positioned some cameras to monitor what was happening: on one occasion, the video surveillance system would have captured the image of a little girl of just a few years (perhaps four or five) who passes a plate of drugs, probably cocaine, to some frequenters of the brothel, while a woman is beaten.
Overall, there are thirty people under investigation.
Warranty interviews will be held in the next few days.
