Pogacar is crowned with poker in the Volta a Catalunya

MADRID, 24 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) has been crowned winner of the 103rd edition of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, confirming his absolute dominance of the week by also winning the seventh and final stage in the sprint, the fourth of his own, while that the Spanish Mikel Landa (Soudal-Quick Step) finished second overall.

Almost four minutes (3:41) separated the double Tour de France champion from the first of the rest at the end of the party in the city of Barcelona and its Montjuïc circuit, which confirmed Landa and the Colombian Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers) – 5:03 behind the overall winner – like the other two occupants of the podium.

His victory in the sprint this Sunday against the French Dorian Godon (Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale) and Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) adds to those achieved with solo attacks in the mountain stages finished in Vallter, Port Ainé and Queralt. With this, he succeeds his compatriot Primoz Roglic in the list of winners.

On the final day, of 145.3 kilometers with start and finish in Barcelona and six laps of the l’Alt del Castell de Montjuïc circuit, a group of five escaped cyclists arrived, in which the Biscayan Ander Okamika (Burgos-BH ) won the award as the most combative cyclist of the day and the German Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost) was the only one who held him in those first laps.

Attacks such as those of Marc Soler (UAE Emirates) and the work of Egan Bernal’s INEOS Grenadiers starred in the first section of the circuit. Steinhauser, who had stood out, was caught at the beginning of the last lap, with the group on after a first move by Pogacar on the hardest slopes of the Castell de Montjuïc.

Despite the attacks in the last lap from the Belgian Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Dstny), the British Stephen Williams (Israel-Premier Tech) and the Portuguese Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates), everything was decided in a short sprint of about twenty of cyclists, with Pogacar taking the win.
