Plans for New Entertainment District and Arena in Alexandria, Virginia Fall Through, NHL and NBA Franchises to Stay in Washington

Plans to build a new entertainment district including a multifunctional arena in Alexandria, Virginia, have fallen through. After resistance from politicians and the population, the project, worth over 1.9 billion euros, was canceled. The NHL and NBA franchises of the Capitals and Wizards will remain in Washington, where the traditional home venue, the Capital One Arena, will receive investments of around 477 million euros.

“We are disappointed that negotiations did not result in a proposal that protects our financial interests and respects community values,” the city of Alexandria said in a news release. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin even said: “A unique project that would have brought world-class sports and entertainment, generated 30,000 jobs and $12 billion in economic activity has gone up in smoke. This transformative project would have brought investment to every corner of the Commonwealth.”
