Paris 2024 Olympic Games: road race or mountain bike, why Mathieu Van der Poel has not yet chosen

The Classics season has barely started, Mathieu Van der Poel has already assured his long-term future. At 29, the Dutch world champion (road and cyclocross) has extended his contract with Alpecin-Deceuninck until 2028.

The grandson of Raymond Poulidor has also signed a ten-year partnership with the Canyon bicycle brand. “Maybe five years as a runner, then the others as an ambassador,” he slipped during the official announcement this Monday, two days after helping his teammate Jasper Philipsen to win Milan – San Remo of which he was the title holder.

Regarding his near future, however, Mathieu Van der Poel has not yet cleared up all the questions. Which event will he compete in this summer during the Paris Olympics (July 26 – August 11)? “I don’t know yet,” he confides. Will I do the road race (August 3), the mountain bike (July 29) or both? We will make the decision after the Classics. For the moment, everything is possible. »

The Dutchman, who made the Tour of Flanders (won in 2020 and 2022), on March 31 and Paris-Roubaix (won in 2023), on April 7, his two major spring objectives, is also tempted to help his team to win the Green Jersey in the next Tour de France (June 29 to July 21).
