Padres split wins with Dodgers on Korean soil

SEOUL — Yoshinobu Yamamoto was bombed after one inning of a disastrous debut in the Major Leagues and the San Diego Padres beat the Dodgers 15-11 on Thursday, hours after Los Angeles fired Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter over a complaint about illegal bets.

Jake Cronenworth matched his career high with four hits and four RBIs for San Diego, which shared wins in the inaugural two-game series, the first of the majors in South Korea.

Within a 17-hit Padres offense, catcher Luis Campusano hit two doubles among his three hits. Jackson Merrill, the 20-year-old center fielder, had his first two hits in the major leagues.

After the Dodgers rallied from trailing 9-2 to within 12-11, Manny Machado hit a three-run homer in the ninth off JP Feyereisen.

Mookie Betts had four hits — including the first home run of the season in this major league campaign — and drove in six runs for the Dodgers.

Ohtani hit three fly balls to deep outfield as he went 1 for 5 on the night. He finished 3 for 10 with one RBI in the series. Performer Ippei Mizuhara was fired Wednesday following reports by the Los Angeles Times and ESPN about alleged ties to an illegal gambler.

Yamamoto (0-1) joined the Dodgers in the winter break by signing a 12-year, $325 million contract, a record amount for a pitcher who has raised enormous expectations. San Diego’s entire lineup faced the two-time Pacific League MVP in Japan. He was left with an ERA of 45.00 after allowing five runsfour hits, a walk, a hit by a pitch and a wild pitch.

Michael King (1-0) earned the victory in his debut with the Padres after being acquired in the trade that sent Juan Soto to the New York Yankees. King allowed three runs in 3 1/3 innings. Venezuelan Robert Suárez got four outs for the save. Padres starter Joe Musgrove allowed five runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings.
