In her first match at the tournament, Ostapenko lost to German tennis player Angelique Kerber in three sets 7-5, 3-6, 3-6.

Ostapenko, seeded 10th in the tournament, took a 3-1 lead in the first set, but lost the next four games to trail 3-5. However, Alona was able to respond with a four-game winning streak to make it 7-5. In the second set after 2-2, Kerber was superior in the next two games and protected the accumulated advantage. In the decisive third set, Kerber took the lead 5-3 with a break advantage and secured the victory in the match in an intense last game.

As of the second week of March, Ostapenko is ranked 10th in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, while former ranking leader Kerber is ranked 607th. Kerber became a mother a year ago and the 36-year-old tennis player is returning to the tour this season.

As the higher seed, Ostapenko was free in the first round. Last year, Alona reached the third round in Indian Wells, while in 2021 she reached the semi-finals.

Ostapenko has won two titles this season in Adelaide and Linz, but Indian Wells is home to a higher-level tournament. Only four “Grand Slam” tournaments of the season are quoted even higher.

Latvia’s second racket, Darja Semenistaja, made her debut in the qualification of the Indian Wells tournament, where she lost to British tennis player Harieta Darta in the first round. Anastasija Sevastova, on the other hand, withdrew her participation due to a leg injury sustained earlier in the tournament in Texas.

In the doubles matches, Ostapenko will participate in a duet with her usual partner, Ukrainian Lyudmila Kichenok.

The tournament in Indian Wells will last until March 17, with a total prize fund of almost 9.26 million dollars for men and women. The winner of the women’s singles will earn 1,000 ranking points.
